What does the process look like to refinish my cabinets?
In general, this is what to expect:
Removal and organization of all doors, drawers, + hardware
Thorough degreasing / cleaning of frames, doors, and drawer faces
Protect all areas not receiving paint / finish with specialty tape + masking
Scuff-sand (dustless) all surfaces to be coated
Base coat / hi-bonding primer applied (2) coats
Additional prep after drying to cover surface blemishes with specialty wood fillers
Any additional repair required beyond prep
Sanding smooth in between each coat for a smooth finish yet allowing good adhesion between coats
Top coat (2) / fine finish spray only - industrial wood coatings designed for high-traffic surfaces - available in any color
Inspection / touch-ups
Clean-up / restore kitchen to normal
Reinstall doors / drawers / hardware (or install new if being updated)
What is the total time for an average kitchen cabinet refinish project?
Any kind of home remodel project will disrupt the flow of daily life. Cabinet refinishing typically (for an average size kitchen) requires the space to be occupied and worked on for a minimum of five days with an aim from start to finish no longer than 7-10. Doors and drawers are brought back to our shop to spray in our booth and dry in our dedicated drying racks. We then complete the cabinet boxes in your home. This is the least intrusive method, as we return with beautiful doors and drawers to reinstall and complete your new kitchen.
What is the dry time?
Typically dry to the touch within hours and fully cured within one week. You are free to use them within 24 hours as you normally would with the exception of overuse and cleaning with harsh chemicals before a full cure.
Where are you located? What areas do you service?
We are based in coastal Maine & southern / coastal NH allowing us to service customers throughout the seacoast, coastal NH and parts of Massachusetts North Shore.
Are you a big company?
Independent and proud. We are led by Brett William + Gregory Paul, co-owners, life-long Mainers and fine finish craftsman. We also happen to be life-long friends. In fact, check out the kind words of our happy customers and notice you’ll find mention of us on most every project. We love fine finish and beautiful paint and have been at it for over 25 years. We operate a small tight crew focused on making our customers very happy with their new kitchen.
What does it cost and can you provide an estimate?
It depends on what you’re having done. We focus on three general services overall: full service, hybrid, + custom/unique projects.
Our full service is applied to most full kitchen sets and begins at $4500 and scales depending on size of kitchen and scope of work. You can start the estimate process here to see how we’d price your project.
Our hybrid service is for those DIYers looking to save (starting at $2500) where we professionally spray all doors and drawers and you paint the frames (we’ll help guide you). Text us to learn more.
Have a custom / unique project you’d like to talk about? We work with homeowners, contractors, interior designers, and others applying fine finishes to architectural millwork, custom cabinetry, and even furniture. Text us to discuss your needs.
What sized kitchens do you do?
All of them. We love to see our customers walk into kitchens they love again, regardless of size.
Do you provide cabinet refacing (new doors + drawers) and / or hardware upgrades?
We do! In terms of investing in your kitchen, painting / refinishing is the most cost-effective starting point. But in some cases, the doors + drawers have not aged well or you’d prefer to upgrade the style (say from a raised panel to shaker). Refacing is the solution. Instead of gutting your entire kitchen in favor of entirely new cabinets, many customers opt to upgrade their surroundings for an entirely new kitchen feel - keeping the cabinet frames / boxes while changing the door + drawer faces before refinishing/paint. This is topped off with new hardware (knobs, pulls, hinges) for a completely new kitchen feel. And by reinventing your cabinets this way without replacement, you can find new things to do to your kitchen with the savings.
Can I paint in any color? Will you help me choose?
You bet. The easiest method to explore color options is to reference Benjamin Moore or Sherwin Williams color wheels (we will bring to your home if we are doing on-site visit / estimating). We can match to any color with our industrial wood coatings.
We always offer color advice but can also offer more comprehensive consulting for those who wish to explore deeper before choosing.
What paint / coatings are used?
We work with a number of professional industrial woodworking and furniture / cabinet coatings. We do NOT put wall paint on your cabinets. We’re quite fond of italian industrial wood coatings manufacturer, Renner. You can learn more here.
Do you spray the frames / boxes or just the doors & drawers?
Yes. Your home is protected and properly ventilated during the process. When complete, other than a new kitchen feel, you will be left with beautifully refinished cabinetry and no trace we were there.
Do you finish other types of cabinetry / furnishings or millwork?
We do! In addition to kitchen cabinets (about 80% of our work), we fine finish spray other millwork for new remodels and custom carpentry such as built-ins and even furniture. Contact us to discuss your needs.
What is your service area?
We service coastal Maine, New Hampshire, and parts of Massachusetts with locations in both states. We began our journey in coastal Maine and our primary spray facility is based in York + Yarmouth.
